6A and 6B Oceanography

We Hope That You Enjoy The Presentation And Learn Something New!

Presentation By: Lindsay, Christina, Nina, and Anna.

Also, We Would Like To Thank All Of The 6th Grade Ocean Explorers For Making The Posters!

My fish is called the, "Four eyed fish."  What we are learning in
Science is about the ocean floor.  We had to pick an exotic fish and research
about it and find interesting facts about it.  We also had to draw the fish
and color it.  We had a big piece of blue paper and we had to put our
fish in the bottom, middle, or top of where it lives. My fish lives near the top.

Recently we have been researching types of fish that
we don't typically see in the ocean anymore. This is a
video about leatherback sea turtle. We had to share facts,
where it lives, interesting facts, etc. We researched animals
like this one because we had to learn about animals that
live in the ocean. We wanted to learn more about animals
and the ocean that we didn't know anymore. ~CG

We made a replica of the ocean floor and we labeled the ocean floor. This showed us what the topography of the ocean floor is like.  We made it with 3 people and we worked on it for a couple of days. It was a fun learning experience!   S.P.
We made a replica of the ocean floor with model magic, two shoeboxes, popsicle sticks and cardboard. We had to assign different items for each of us to go out and buy for our project. Putting it together was a great learning experience for me and very enjoyable. We labeled the different parts of the ocean floor, such as the continental slope and guyot. I had lots of fun putting it together with my friends!  D.O.

For the past week everyone in the 6th grade chose a fish and drew a picture of it. We then researched the fish and found interesting facts about the fish and how we can save it from the waste and other harmful things in our ocean. When everyone was done researching and drawing our picture we made our own ocean. Everyone put their fish on a banner of blue paper and there information right nect to their fish. We all pitched in and decorated the banner with ocean features. We hope you enjoy seeing our ocean in the hallway during catholic schools week.

Today in science class we drew the ocean floor. We are researching different fish and taking notes on them. We are drawing them and putting them on our ocean floor picture. We had to find out what layer our ocean creature lives on and also in science lab we made a graph of the depth of the ocean. We colored them. My creature is the sea plant. It got its name because it looks like an old fashion quill pen. My fish is the Saddleback clownfish. Its range is in the western pacific. The other class made an ocean floor also. We are learning about the ocean floor, and all the sea life below. We are also learning the scienctific terms of the ocean floor. We all chose very interesting fish. Our classmates and us are very excited for this project, and more projects in the future. S.D. and N.S.

Skyping with Dr. Ellen Prager

Friday was an exciting day for the sixth grade. We were able to skype with Dr.Ellen Prager a well respected marine scientist and author. The girls asked her many questions about the ocean. They were mezmorized. It was so exciting to see them totally involved. Just watch the video and look at the pictures taken during the class.  Many of the girls are thinking of entering the science field! I am so happy to see their enthusiasm and be a part of the adventure.

Day 2 Modeling the Ocean Floor

In this picture we are making the ocean floor.  We used Model Magic, shells, and sand etc. Our whole class is making all different kinds of ocean floors and how we think that they would look. We will put the finished project in the hall so everyone can see.  NK

In this picture my group is making a model of Ocean Features. We are doing this using clay and model magic. It is messy but it is going to look great when we are finished. Right now we are the ocean trench. AB

Ocean Project

Today we have been making dioramas of the topography of the ocean. My group is showing the different features of the ocean floor. We're adding things such as coral, seaweed and volcanoes. We've been learning about some of the landforms on the ocean floor. We learned about mid ocean ridge, the abyss, ocean trenches and many more. We are also studying the animals that live in the ocean and what parts of the ocean they live in. We are all very excited to see the finished products of our ocean floor projects and can't wait to learn all about the ocean and the creatures that lie within!

Today we have recently been starting our project on the ocean floor. My group, although we have been  short of supplies,we have been creating the ocean floor! We plan on bringing in some fish and other materials for tomorrow. It will look spectacular!

Temperature and Salinity of Ocean Water Experiment

Today we learned that salt water has greater density than fresh water. When we did this experiment we wanted to try and find out why people float in the Red Sea. After the experiment we concluded that the Red Sea has the most salt of any body of water. This means you float all of the time.
The warmer the water is than the faster the salt dissolves.
In these pictures you can see that the colored water is separated
because the orange part has more salt then the green and the orange colored water sinks to the bottom
because it has a greater amont of salt which makes greater density than the green colored water.

Here is a short clip of the girls at work.

Exploring the Ocean

Welcome to our 6th grade blog on the oceans. We are going to use this blog to share our research, findings, and anything else we learn about the ocean.

Our essential question for this unit is "Why do we need the ocean?"

To start our unit, we watched the video below. It is a TED talk given by oceanographer Robert Ballard.
